Magnesium Chip, Granule and Powder Applications

ESM-SMT has a long history of providing a large variety of magnesium products for the following industrial applications:

Magnesium Grignard Reagents – An organometallic reaction used by the chemical industry in the formation of carbon-carbon bonds, carbon-silicon bonds, carbon boron bonds, carbon-phosphorus bonds, and other similar organic compounds. Grignard reagents are used in pharmaceuticals and petrochemical applications.  ESM-SMT customizes the magnesium chips and powders for this application to meet specific customer requirements like surface area, bulk density, reactivity, etc.

Magnesium for Exothermic Heating Reaction – Magnesium granules together with other components are the principle heat source in the Flameless Ration Heater (FRH) application. By adding water this combination of ingredients produces a controllable thermal reaction for warming food packet field rations and hot beverages in both commercial and military usage, called Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) in U.S. military jargon.

 

Magnesium Granules for Metallothermic Compound Reduction – Magnesium granules are used in the metallurgical field as a primary reducing reagent for the production of elemental metals from suitable oxidic compounds.

Magnesium Granules for Welding Cored Wire – Flux additions including magnesium powders are added in the wire drawing manufacturing process for making cored weld wire. Magnesium powders are also used in the manufacture of flux coated welding rods.

Commercial and Military Pyrotechnics Effects – Magnesium granules and powders (mechanical and atomized) of a wide range of sizes are used by pyrotechnic firms involved in custom designed pyrotechnic effects for high performance production events. Military contractors use Magnesium powders as energy and light source for countermeasure flares and illumination flares.

 

Magnesium Carbon Brick – Magnesium granules are used in the formulation of magnesium carbon bricks primarily used in the steel industry for ladle refining furnaces.  The high vapor pressure for metallic magnesium forms an in-penetrable magnesium oxide barrier close to the hot face of the refractory bricks.

Ferroalloy Production – Magnesium granules are used in the metallurgical field as a reducing agent for the metallothermic starter or reduction of ferroalloys in converting the oxides to the metallic state.

Marine Signal Flares – Magnesium granules are used in the manufacturing of marine signal flares with their highly visible illumination effect.

These industries are served with magnesium chips, pieces, granules (varied granulations), powder (varied granulations) made by mechanical grinding or atomization process to both standard and customized size specifications and are packaged in economical steel UN drums, totes, big bags, and bulk trailers.

CAST IRON TREATMENT

With the increase in the demand of the automotive and machine industry, the foundries have been serving a highly-demanding market concerning the mechanical properties of cast iron. Stronger, harder products are required to extend the life of components.

The Solution

SKW offers a full line of desulfurization agents to be applied in melting processes performed in cupola furnaces. These are manufactured on a customized basis to operate in accordance with the requirements of each process. The products are made of calcium oxide, calcium carbide, calcium fluoride as well as others. The desulfurization agents are applied through the Gasal system, which also combines the streams of metal/slags in a syphon ladle with stirring made possible by inert gas. The result: lower specific consumption, high rates of desulfurization, high treatment speed and low cost per treated ton.

The Solution

We offer the Technolsulfur line of customized sintered synthetic slagswith specific performance in each process. Such products are made of calcium aluminates, calcium and magnesium silicates, pseudo silicates, aluminates and others. The main purpose of the sintered synthetic slags is to remove undesired elements in the steel (S, P, non-metallic inclusions) and prevent hydrogen pick-up. They are used in electric furnaces or ladles with excellent spread ability, as well as performing other important functions in the steel refining such as protecting the hot metal by avoiding contact with the atmosphere which in turn minimizes thermal losses and prevents the exposure of the electric arc during the heating and melting in the electric arc furnace.
