Magnesium Alloy Granule and Powder Applications

ESM-SMT has expanded it’s product lineup to include standard and custom atomized and mechanical magnesium alloy powders for the following industrial applications:

Powder Metallurgy – A set of cutting edge development technologies to manufacture magnesium parts, for example by using hot isotactic pressing (HIP) or by metal injection molding (MIM). A variety of particle shapes and size ranges are being used for these processes.

Additive Manufacturing – Another set of cutting edge development technologies to manufacture magnesium parts or to repair and enhance existing parts, for example by using direct laser metal sintering (DLMS) or cold spraying. A variety of fine particle sizes are being used for these processes.

Medical Applications – Recent research is focusing on the unique characteristics of magnesium alloys in being a close match to bone. In addition magnesium alloys have unique corrosion properties that allow designing tailor made corrosion behavior of certain magnesium alloys which, when implanted into the body, dissolve over time (biodegradable or bioresorbable alloys). One example application for these alloys is to allow implants to “disappear” as bone grows, eliminating the need to remove the implant later.
